At an Electoral Synod, October 3, 2020, held at the Cathedral Church of the diocese, Christ Church and livestreamed on YouTube utilizing remote voting, the Reverend John R. Stephens, Rector of St. John's, Shaughnessy of the Diocese of New Westminster was elected Coadjutor Bishop on the third ballot.
He was consecrated January 23, 2021 becoming the Right Reverend John Stephens and was installed and seated the 10th Bishop of New Westminster on February 28, 2021, also the day that the 9th Bishop, the Most Reverend Melissa Skelton retired.
On Saturday, January 18, 2025 the House of Bishops and the Provincial Council of the Ecclesiastical Province of British Columbia and Yukon elected Bishop John Stephens as the next Metropolitan. With his election as Metropolitan, Bishop Stephens became Archbishop. He remains the head of the Diocese of New Westminster and in addition to his duties is responsible for the Ecclesiastical Province of BC and Yukon. His title is now Archbishop, referred to as the Most Rev. John Stephens.
